Freddy Negrete is a renowned tattoo artist celebrated for pioneering the black-and-gray realism style, characterized by fine lines and nuanced shading. His journey began in his youth within the California correctional system, where he developed his craft using improvised tools. Upon his release, Negrete's distinctive artistry garnered attention, leading to his collaboration with Ed Hardy at Good Time Charlie's Tattooland in East Los Angeles. This partnership was instrumental in introducing the black-and-gray style to a broader audience.

Beyond tattooing, Negrete has contributed to Hollywood as a technical consultant and artist on films such as "Batman Forever" and "Con Air." He co-authored his memoir, "Smile Now, Cry Later: Guns, Gangs, and Tattoos—My Life in Black and Gray," offering insight into his transformative journey. Currently, Negrete practices his art at the Hollywood Vatican on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood, California. ​
